Research

I haven't done n extensive amount of research for this shoot because I already have previous knowledge of what a storyboard consists of and looks like.

To get some more ideas of what makes a storyboard I researched some images.

After looking at these images I found that most storyboards consist of 6-9 images with a line of text below to add context.

Contact sheet

My storyboard

Analysis

The first image- This image is the start of the story, the start of the day and the start of a new world for the character. Everything here seems normal and the text suggests that it should be just like any other day. This is a photograph of the character in their room looking at their phone as any teenager would do in the morning. Nothing abnormal is happening and the lens cap gives the image a round look that fits in with the cycle. The picture is set up to look as if we are looking into a doorway. The doorway represents the start of something as if we are opening a storybook. I used a lens hood to block any unwanted light from the windows behind me. The tripod I used helped keep the image steady. I used a canon d2000 digital camera with an 18-33mm lens and this particular image was shot in- 13/10 sec. f/5 18 mm. I used the text "it starts in the morning" to add context to show the beginning of the cycle.

The second image-This image is to stretch the ideas from the first image of normality and the beginning of the characters cycle. I used a fast shutter speed as the light from the window was overexposing the image and I wanted to create a silhouette figure. The silhouette is the start of creating the idea that something might not be right. The reason I haven't involved my face in the story is that it's not about me or how the character is feeling because that part of the cycle is up to the audience. They decide who the character is and how they would react to this. The storyboard is like other storyboards in that it's explaining the concept but not how I would feel. I've done this to heighten the emotions of the viewers and bring out questions. I used a canon d2000 digital camera with an 18-33mm lens and this particular image was shot in- 1/20 sec. f/5 32 mm.

The third image- for this image I used slow shutter speed to create a ghost floating across the room. At this point in the story, this image acts as a pivotal moment in which the audience can start to put together what is happening. The blurred figure is ghostly and unaware of her condition. In this image, the character is walking from her room to the next image. The motion-captured in this picture helps the flow of the storyboard. The words "the worlds a little blurry" is actually inspired by a documentary about the life of Billie Eilish "the world is a little blurry". I recently watched and loved this documentary and when thinking of text for this image these words automatically came to mind. It subtly suggests that something is not right and that something supernatural. I used a canon d2000 digital camera with an 18-33mm lens and this particular image was shot in-1 sec. f/5 18 mm. I chose to shoot these images in colour to add interest and to make them more relatable to the viewer.

The fourth image-In this fourth image I have edited out the reflection of myself to create a supernatural theme and to add to the idea that the character is no longer. Unlike the other images, this is a definite sign that the character is no longer alive/human/normal. I edited it using photoshop- I selected the version of myself in front of the mirror and dragged it across to an identical image but without the character in it. I then used the eraser tool to soften the edges of the selected cutout to blend it in with the chosen background. Finally, I used the dodge and burn tools to correct any light imperfections within the image. Using a slow shutter speed created a ghostly blur with signs of motions. I used a canon d2000 digital camera with an 18-33mm lens and this particular image was shot in-2 sec. f/5 18 mm. The text below which reads "and my soul feels light" was chosen to tell the audience that this situation involves the idea of a lost soul. These ideas of lost self connect to the cycle and lockdown. This lockdown has had everyone's mind gong to bizarre places and some feel lost and alone.

The fifth image- The fifth image is of the character trying to pick up a family photo but failing to do so as she can no longer connect with items in the real world. She is just an observer of life now as it passes on without her. So as the text suggests " I'm disconnected from life" This is an explanation of what's happening that makes clear to the viewer that she is no longer alive. This could bring about many different feelings in the viewer such as pity, sadness and possibly fear about what might happen after death. Other questions such as "why did she die?" "Does she know she's dead?" "can she see people who are alive?". I edited it in photoshop- The first thing I did was select the character in the image(this image is without the frame so my hand is grabbing into the air) and drag it over to a photo with the frame in. I used the eraser tool to blend in the edges of the figure with the background, then the same tool to fade my hand to give the illusion that it's floating through the frame. I used a canon d2000 digital camera with an 18-33mm lens and this particular image was shot in-3/5 sec. f/5 21 mm.

The sixth image-The sixth image is the end of the story. Acceptance. The character has now accepted her fate and is sitting feeling alone and isolated from any company or sanity. The final text is evanesced which by definition means to pass out of sight, memory, or existence. Before now I have never heard this word so I think it fits well with the theme of self-loss because I can predict that not many people know what this word means just like how no one remembers the character. This is a final shot to show that in every tragedy there has to be acceptance. Because everything comes to end. This photo portrays sadness and fear and hopefully shows the pain this situation provokes. I used a canon d2000 digital camera with an 18-33mm lens and this particular image was shot in-8/5 sec. f/5 18 mm. I edited this in photoshop- I selected the character and dragged it across to an image without the character sitting and adjusted the opacity to create a faded look.

The story

She wakes up, the morning starts as any other would.

When the blinds open again and the light comes pouring in.

Everything seems as is should but the worlds a little blurry.

My reflection ran away and my soul feels light.

Reality a touch away like I'm disconnected from life.

Evanesced.

These ideas of lost self connect to the cycle and lockdown. This lockdown has had everyone's mind gong to bizarre places and some feel lost and alone. The first shoot I did was about "The message behind these links towards the pandemic and the self-reflection isolation has caused. Depending on the viewer's mindset you could look at this multiple ways. Reflecting on your past life and reminiscing about times before the pandemic. Having time to rediscover parts of you that you thought were lost. Regretting decisions an arguments with the people you miss the most. Everyone will have experienced one or more of these during this time and the aim of this work is to notice how you've grown and changed and understand that others feel as you do too." The second shoot I did was about "By using multiple versions of myself I hope to show the repetition of the cycle of our lockdown lives and represent how many people will be feeling. The fist two lockdowns were hard but there's an easy feel of anger in the British air. People are ready now more than ever for this pandemic to end." so as you can see all my shoots have been created around the concept of isolation and the cycle of our lives repeating.

Experimentation

I decided to make a sequence from all the pictures from my shoot because there were images I edited that I didn't use in my storyboard that I still thought could work in this cycle.

The first and last image are very similar except at the start the character is visible and in the last shes disappeared. This reiterates the idea that she is a ghost and we slowly discover that as we work our way through the pictures.

This experimentation was something I thought of whilst editing the original image.

This piece represents the ghost self looking back on her past life and not being able to do anything about it. it also could be her real self looking in and criticising the person she became in lockdown.

Evaluation

What went well-

Overall I am very happy with the results and all three shoots completed their desired intentions. There were no problems during the shoots and I enjoyed coming up with the experimentation. The reason I enjoy experimentation so much is that during a shoot my mind is constantly getting distracted with new ideas and concept. For the efficiency of the shoot I have to stick to my shoot plan but experimentation allows me to explore those alleys in my mind and often I end up liking my experimentation more than my original outcome. The message of this storyboard turned out to be a lot clearer than I originally thought. It was really easy to think of text to put below it and because of this text, the concept is much easier to understand. Although I have outlined the intention of this storyboard it can still be interpreted in different ways depending on the view and beliefs of the viewer. Everyone will have their own opinions as there are a lot of questions brought up from this storyboard because I intentionally didn't give it all away.

Even better if

There were a few factors about this project that I wish had been different.

The weather- Although one of my favourite challenges within photography is making the plain grey British weather beautiful by highlighting the emotions of a mundane world, I can't help but wish the sun would have been out the day of the shoots. I believe the sun shining through the windows of my house might have acted as a saviour in a boring beige environment. Analysing how the rays of sunshine would affect the tone of the photos might have been interesting. I could have linked the sun to the happiness we all predict for the future. But we can't control the weather.

Model- Throughout this project, I have had to use myself as the model in my images. Although I had an app, tripod and timer to help the process still took longer than it would have if I had a model. Normally I would have used one of my friends which make the experience a lot more fun that can lead to a creative shoot with more pictures in less time. I do believe that I have definitely improved my self-portraiture skills. Last year I would have every image I took of myself in photography shoots but after thus practise I no longer feel insecure about the results. Self-portraiture I an important skill for any good photographer. It allows you to create examples of work you want to do in the future and/or show a practice shoot before hiring any models or professional equipment. I'm sure over time with more practice I can master the skill of self-portraiture.
